Sharing the Square (and Helping Each Other)

We were delighted to help Sharing the Square during their April residency, which drew attention to Castle Square (at the end of our street) before the planned redevelopment of nearby pedestrian routes, castle access and wayfinding options in the town centre.

It was a community engagement project commissioned by Pembrokeshire County Council and delivered by Space to Create, along with associates Ruth Essex, Janetka Platun and Heidi Baker. Ruth said, “We wanted to create a buzz and positive atmosphere to host conversations, demonstrate the potential for change and show how the square could evolve into a multifaceted social hub… Rather like a town-square version of Haverhub!

“Overall, we wanted to show that the town square belongs to the people of Haverfordwest.”

Of course, we couldn’t agree more with this vision, which aligns with our own desire to make spaces available for the community to develop in their own way.

Part of the project involved creating a mobile garden and benches to bring greenery and seating into Castle Square while activities took place. The benches were made by Pembrokeshire based sculptor and carpenter Otto Gobey using native grown larch, were planted by town residents and decorated by Art & Design students from Pembrokeshire College – making the garden a true community creation!

After the 4 days were up, Sharing the Square kindly donated the mobile garden to us, as a thank you for using our courtyard for storage during their residency. The living furniture is perfect for our outdoor space, arriving just in time for summer, and goes very well with our colourful wall murals by the talented Lloyd the Graffiti! The best part is, they’re also moveable, so can accommodate whatever exciting events we have going on in the courtyard.

Ruth hopes “people and nature will continue to enjoy them”, which is happening already…

A few weeks ago we held our first outdoor music event of the year, and all the benches were filled with happy bums, as well as our staff, who have already enjoyed spending lunch breaks outside.

Now the flowers have bloomed (since the sunshine arrived!) which has brought happy bees into a new, pollen-filled refuge in town.

Happy bees, happy bums, happy Haverhub!

So, we invite you to come and enjoy these bright benches with us over the summer too. Check out our upcoming events, and don’t forget about Open Mic every Wednesday evening, year round.

If you’ve got a moment, Sharing the Square asks everyone who came along to get in touch with any feedback, fill out a short (2 question!) survey, or email them at hello@sharingthesquare.org. The survey closes on 7th June, but you can stay up to date by following them on Instagram.
