Join us for an enlightening talk with Dr. Elizabeth Mackintosh, a philosopher and visiting research fellow at the University of Winchester.

In this talk, Beth will take us on a journey through the history of philosophy, exploring how influential thinkers like Aristotle and Descartes traditionally viewed animals and nature—often seeing them as subordinate or mere machines. She’ll then introduce us to the radical philosophers, such as Mary Midgley, who challenged this status quo and reshaped our understanding of our place in the world.

Beth’s work focuses on moral philosophy and animal ethics, and she recently led the UK’s ‘Team Wales’ for the global ‘Philosophy in the Wild – Finding Hope in Mixed Communities’ project. This project was inspired by Midgley’s idea of the “mixed community,” which argues that humans have always been intertwined with other species and that we should work towards non-exploitative, multi-species communities that benefit all members.

Beth is also a fellow at the Oxford Interfaith Forum and has a background in both philosophy and theology. She’s a passionate advocate for listening in philosophical discourse, making complex ideas accessible and engaging for everyone.
