History Talk: Slavery, Abolition, and Pembrokeshire’s Past

Historian and author Mark Muller will give a powerful and thought-provoking talk exploring one of the most challenging chapters of our history.

Using clear historical evidence and local examples, the talk will examine the rise of slave ownership in this country, the immense wealth it generated, and the systems that sustained it. Mark will then trace the heroic and prolonged struggle to achieve abolition, highlighting the moral courage and persistence required to bring slavery to an end.

The talk will also focus on Pembrokeshire itself, revealing prominent local individuals and families who were major slave owners, and showing how global slavery was closely connected to our own county’s past.

This talk offers an important opportunity to understand how international history and local heritage are deeply intertwined, and to reflect on the lasting legacy of slavery today.
