Caitlin Flood-Molyneux Exhibition Opening

June 1 @ 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Going Away in Order To Return

Caitlin Flood- Molyneux is an award-winning contemporary artist, raised in Haverfordwest
and a graduate of the MFA programme at Cardiff School of Art. Her artistic practice
investigates the way we attach emotion and memory to images, using mixed media
techniques to express subjective experiences of hardship. She has exhibited widely across
the UK and internationally and has recently shown work at Christie’s and Sotheby’s
Auction House in London. In May this year she was shortlisted for the prestigious Forbes
30 and was a delegate at the conference in Botswana. Through her work – as artist and
educator, Caitlin aims to empower and inspire creatively curious people with arts to see
creativity as a tool for personal growth and wellbeing. For her, art has always been a way
to process difficult feelings and she has enormous belief in its therapeutic power.

From love and loss to grief and anger, and from the graphic to the painterly the contrasts
inherent in the works result in visceral highly expressive paintings. Flood-Molyneux’s work
is both deeply personal and universal, as it charts key moments of her life; a private and
enigmatic visual story with which she invites the viewer to forge their own connection. The
work is a form of storytelling where the artist has built a visual language to express
complex and often conflicting emotions. Playfully using recognisable symbols and personal
imagery to communicate the extreme highs and lows of her life, the paintings speak of
sorrow and success, hope and disappointment, a longing for home and the impulse to
escape.
It is important to Flood-Molyneux that her paintings be not only be perceived just as a
visual entity, but also as an opportunity for reflection. The work aims to allow both viewer
and artist to muse upon the past as one would when reminiscing to the sound of a
nostalgic song, where an initially faint memory becomes a vivid recollection.
Alongside the exhibition will be a series of workshops with local groups that will introduce
Caitlin’s ways of working and empower participants to make their own artworks inspired by
their memories and experiences.

Caitlin: “I find making art very therapeutic, it gives me a voice to share my experiences
and battle. Painting helps me to process things that have happened in my life.
This project has been a dream to work on, after having some successes away from home,
to be able to come back and hopefully inspire people to get creative is really important to
me. Art is for everyone. It’s not always about skill or the way something looks, it’s about
passion and process.”

Going Away In Order to Return is curated by Paisley A Randell, a fellow graduate of the
MA course at the School of Art and Design at Cardiff Met and Director of Umbrella Cardiff
“Caitlin’s paintings confront her individual and artistic struggles in Wales, navigating
familial challenges, loss and the complexities of queerness. Each piece is a testament to
resilience and introspection, offering viewers a compelling narrative woven with emotion
and authenticity. As the curator, it’s a full-circle moment to showcase her journey; from our
shared experiences on the MA to this pivotal exhibition in the organisation I helped to
establish, being able to platform Caitlin’s work in the home I’ve created for queer artists
feels incredibly special.”
